At THE VILLAGE, we have decided to read a book by Henri Nouwen, and need to decide on a title. The Way of the Heart: Connecting With God Through Prayer, Wisdom, and SilenceA contemporary rereading of the Sayings of the Desert Fathers/Mothers. Focusing on the threefold command to Abba Arsenius, "Flee! Be silent! Pray!" Nouwen pursues the implications for contemporary ministers of early Christian teaching on the fundamental role of the three disciplines of solitude, silence, and unceasing prayer.
Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular WorldThe prologue frames the background leading to the publication of this unique volume. A close-knit friendship with a young friend who styles himself a "secular Jew" leads to a pressing request of the author to "...speak a word of hope to people who no longer (come) to churches or synagogues and for whom priests and rabbis (are) no longer the obvious counselors." Only after much resistance does the author comply. There is a Catch-22 at the end of the story, but it would be unfair to readers to rob them of the surprise awaiting them in the epilogue.

THE VILLAGE will be going mini-golfing at Putting Edge in Burlington this Sunday @ 7PM. We'll be meeting there (i.e. 1250 Brant Street...if you're travelling East on the 403, exit at Brant Street, take a LEFT, and Putting Edge is on your LEFT near the Silver City). Cost is around $10. Last Week...REST
SO...last week we continued our study of Hebrews, and looked at the recurrent concept of REST (Hebrews 3-4); specifically what REST meant for the community of Israel throughout their history (pre/post Promised Land), what it meant for the 1st Century community of believers (to whom the letter to the Hebrews was written), and what it can mean for us today (i.e. how we can find REST). It's hard to distill our entire discussion in a few words, but if i were to try, REST can been seen as connected to time/space (e.g. Sabbath as a specific day, Promised Land as a place for REST to take place), as well as connected to one's condition/state (i.e. the possiblity of finding REST along one's journey of faith). As John Calvin wrote, REST can be understood as the "highest human happiness," and this relates to being at peace with God (which can happen at any time in any place, as long as we remain obedient). But since REST is both physical and spiritual, if we emphasize one aspect to the exclusion of the other (e.g. the importance of a specific time or place), we've missed the point. Making space for God in our lives is important, but this is only a vehicle for us to experience REST.MP
